Why do chicks hatch early

You should stop turning them at day 18 and they should not be touched again at all. This gives the hatchling a chance to get into the correct position for pipping. Keep the incubator closed, opening it only if you judge that you need to top up water to increase humidity and if you need to move a chick into the brooder. It always starts with a small hole in or near the air cell. As the hole gets bigger you will be able to see the tiny egg-tooth pointing through. That first 'pip' is a magical moment!

Some will come out very quickly, using their egg tooth to 'unzip' until they're able to push the shell apart and wiggle themselves free within an hour or less. But for others progress can be very slow, sometimes taking more than 24 hours. It's a hard process for a tiny baby chick.

You'll find that more often than not they will need to rest in between periods of activity. This Wyandotte egg is almost completely unzipped, but it took 25 hours from first pip to hatching!

Chicks are very wet when they come out of the egg and as you might expect, tired and wobbly on their legs.

They will alternate between sleeping, and flopping around your incubator knocking into all the other chicks and eggs. This is really important - moving them into a brooder too early can make them cold, and newly hatched chicks are susceptible to the cold. It can kill them very quickly. So, no matter how much they're knocking into everything and everyone else don't worry, your other eggs will be fine. Do make sure that humidity levels in the incubator are not keeping your babies wet though.

If they are, move them if possible to a hatcher. I use a second incubator for this since I once lost a baby who became chilled when she had hatched early. Humidity levels were kept too high for her to dry out. Anyway, I usually have one or two that hatch earlier than the others, and almost always overnight between day 19 and Right now, I have a bunch of eggs on lockdown in the hatcher.

Never decrease ventilation openings at hatching in an attempt to increase humidity. Increase humidity by other methods. If any vent adjustments are made, they should be opened more. Another reason for mortality during hatching is improper humidity adjustment.

The deaths can be produced from too much humidity during the entire incubation period or from too little humidity during the hatching period. The desired egg weight loss during incubation caused by water evaporation is about 12 percent.

If humidity during incubation is kept too high, adequate water evaporation from the egg is prevented. The chick can drown in the water remaining in the shell at hatching.

A dried coating around the chick's nostrils and beak indicates that drowning was likely. Attention to maintaining proper incubation humidity during incubation will reduce the potential for this problem at hatching time.

If the humidity is allowed to decrease after the chick pips the shell, the membranes within the shell can dry-out and stick to the chick.

Infertile eggs will contain entirely yellow contents, with no signs of an embryo or blood. Warning: Cracking open a dud egg can be risky. Wear old clothing and perhaps cover the egg with a bag or towel as you touch it to avoid splatter. The following is mostly relevant to people hatching eggs in an incubator.
